About Me
Hi, I'm Christian Mayer, founder of HeartCode Labs - a creative and technical studio dedicated to preserving, extending, and reimagining legacy computing systems for the modern age.
I grew up on the Commodore 128 in the North-East of France, and used it mostly in Commodore 64 mode (remember the "GO64" command?).
It was more than a machine.
It was a spark.
An invitation to build, to explore, to imagine.
That early fire led me into electronics, software, and systems architecture - and eventually a career at the intersection of tech, storytelling, and soul.
Today, HeartCode Labs is my way of reigniting that spark for a new generation - starting with the Commodore 64 Ultimate, blending period-authentic design with modern enhancements like REU streaming, network integration, stereo audio, and performance tuning.

Vision & Mission
HeartCode Labs believes in system stewardship - honoring the craftsmanship of the past, ensuring its survival in the present, and unlocking new possibilities for the future.
We create original works, enhancements, and tools that showcase the untapped potential of classic computing platforms, beginning with the COMPUTE! Gazette's C64 Ultimate Challenge and beyond.
Our mission:
- Short-term: Deliver flagship C64U-enhanced software that demonstrates ingenuity, polish, and respect for the machine;
- Medium-term: Build a portfolio of Ultimate-only applications, games, and utilities that set the bar for modern retro development;
- Long-term: Explore hardware extensions and peripheral designs that respectfully expand legacy systems without compromising their identity.
The Origin Story
HeartCode Labs began as a quiet calling: the spark of curiosity from a Commodore childhood that never faded.
A love for building systems not just for functionality, but for meaning.
HeartCode = The code that comes from the heart.
The code of creativity. Of wonder.
Of self-leadership. Of legacy.
From dismantling my father's double-bell alarm clock at six, to breaking the piggy bank for my first Commodore 128 at thirteen, this was always more than a hobby.
It was the beginning of a lifelong journey - learning not only how systems work, but why they matter.
For over 15 years in EDA (Electronic Design Automation), I worked where technical mastery meets clarity, helping teams capture over 51% market share in a niche, highly-competitive space.
That same ethos drives HeartCode Labs:
- Serving where technology and emotional stewardship meet;
- Contributing where legacy needs real systems, not just nostalgia;
- Building not just with tools, but with truth, depth and alignment.
Why HeartCode Labs Exists
It's not just a business.
It's a way of building with integrity - where systems serve people, and joy and purpose aren't afterthoughts.
We're not chasing vanity metrics.
We're not scaling at all costs.
We're listening. We're building.
From the inside out.
Echoes from the Spark
Over the years, I've been privileged to work with many outstanding colleagues, leaders, and teams.
The spark lives not only in my story - but in theirs.
Here are some of the words they've shared about my work:
Christian showed a remarkable level of flexibility and loyalty... able to transition rapidly by taking full advantage of his ability to absorb new information and understand the customer's point of view... I wouldn't hesitate to hire Christian again.
Christian is an outstanding communicator and brings passion to his work. His leadership, insight, and ability to deliver has enabled multiple sales opportunities for our team.
Christian embodies the term, professional... despite my discouragement, he encouraged me in the right direction. He has astute industry knowledge and is extremely enthusiastic.
Christian is an engaging and sociable colleague... strong focus on customers and a clear understanding of business and sales. His solid technical knowledge and clear communication make him a key partner.
Christian is task-oriented and hard-working. In our brainstorming meetings, he was always coming up with innovative ideas and can think outside the box. I'd recommend him for any mission-critical task.
Systems Stewardship
I'm not here to chase titles or seek the spotlight.
I serve as a systems steward: building the invisible architecture that allows teams, organizations, and even legacy brands to thrive.
Where technical complexity meets human clarity.
This is where I quietly do my best work - and with HeartCode Labs, it's now the foundation for reigniting the spark in both technology and people.
